Information to have when filing your car insurance claim

When you file an auto claim, you'll be asked to provide some basic details, such as:

Contact and insurance information for everyone involved
Photos of vehicle damage and/or scene of the accident
Where and when the incident took place
Any police reports, along with names and badge numbers of responding officers
Vehicle information for all involved (Year, Make, Model, license plate, VIN#, color, etc.)
Optional Other pertinent information, if available, such as traffic flow, information for witnesses, etc.

Should you file an auto insurance claim?

If you’re involved in an auto accident or incident, it’s best to tell your insurance company and start the auto insurance claim process as soon as possible.

You should report your auto claim especially when:

You, your passengers, or others are injured
You cause damage to someone’s vehicle or property
You cause damage to municipal property (e.g., traffic signs, guardrails, etc.)
Your vehicle or another involved vehicle is undrivable and/or is at a storage yard

If none of the points above apply, consider how much your insurance deductible is and what your coverage limits are. Depending on the repair estimate, you’re responsible to cover the vehicle damages up to your deductible.

The insurance claims filing process with Wawanesa is straightforward. But remember to refer to your policy coverage limits, as that will impact the available coverage. Here’s what to expect:

Claim Assignment

You’ll be assigned a claims adjuster who will verify the details of the incident, review your coverage, and explain the next steps.
If there are injuries, a separate adjuster will be assigned to review those claims. Ensure that you stay in communication and cooperate with your adjuster.

Fact-Finding and Liability Assessment

For liability cases, the adjuster may contact witnesses, gather statements, or request a police report, if available.

Damage Evaluation

A repair estimate will be created for your vehicle. Severe damage may require an in-person inspection. To avoid unnecessary storage fees, allow Wawanesa to inspect your vehicle promptly.

Payment and Repairs

Payments for repairs will be issued directly to you or your chosen repair shop handling the repairs.
Your claims adjuster can provide you with a list of Wawanesa’s Preferred Repair Network Facilities, where the repairs are guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle involved in the claim.

Information to Have When Filing Your Property Insurance Claim

When you file a property claim for theft or damage covered by your homeowners, condo, or renters insurance, you’ll need to provide the following:

Your policy number
The facts of the incident, such as date, time, what happened, etc.
Any reports from experts or contractors who’ve inspected the damage
A copy of the police report (if applicable)
Optionally submit pictures of the damage

Should you file a property insurance claim?

Whenever an accident occurs resulting in bodily injury or property damage that will likely exceed your deductible, you should file an insurance claim. Certain types of homeowners, condo, or renters insurance claims may be excluded from the policy, so if you’re unsure whether something is covered, review your insurance policy documents online or call 800-640-2920 and speak with one of our helpful agents who can review your policy. If the damage is caused by an ongoing maintenance issue or a long-term problem that hasn’t been repaired, it may not be covered by the policy.

As soon as possible, take steps to protect your home against further damage. For example:

Water damage: hire a water mitigation company to dry out the home

Roof damage: have a roofer protect the roof against additional damage with a tarp

Fence damage: ensure the property is safe and secure with a temporary fence

Auto Repairs After Filing a Claim

Once your vehicle’s damage has been assessed through a virtual or in-person inspection, you’ll provide the repair estimate to your chosen repair shop and authorize the work. The repair shop will contact your claims adjuster for further evaluation if additional damage is discovered during repairs.

However, if you use one of our Preferred Repair Network Facilities, the process is much simpler. All you have to do is set up an appointment with the repair shop for both the inspection and repairs. Then, they’ll prepare an estimate on our behalf without Wawanesa needing to inspect your vehicle separately. Once the repairs are complete, you’ll pay your deductible to the auto repair shop and pick up your vehicle.
