Filing Auto Insurance Claims

Information to have when filing your auto insurance claim

When you file an auto claim, you'll be asked to provide some basic details, such as:

  • Contact and insurance information for everyone involved
  • Photos of vehicle damage and/or scene of the accident
  • Where, when the accident or incident took place
  • Any police reports along with names and badge numbers of responding officers
  • Vehicle information for all involved (Year/Make/Model, license plate, VIN#, color, etc.)
  • Optional Other pertinent information if available such as traffic flow, information for witnesses, etc.

Should you report your auto claim?

If you’re involved in an auto accident or incident, it’s best to tell your insurance company and start the claim process as soon as possible, but especially when:

  • You, your passengers, or others are injured.
  • You cause damage to someone's vehicle or property.
  • You cause damage to a municipality's property.
  • Your, or others’ vehicles are not drivable and/or are at a storage yard.

If none of the points above apply, consider how much your insurance deductible is and what your coverage limits are. Depending on the repair estimate, you’re responsible to cover the vehicle damages up to your deductible.

What happens once your auto claim is submitted?

Always refer to the coverage limits on your policy as that will impact the available coverage on the vehicle claim.

You’ll be assigned an adjuster who will verify the facts of the loss, review your coverage, and explain the process.

If there are injuries, a separate adjuster will be assigned to review those claims. Ensure that you stay in communication and cooperate with your adjuster.

Next

If there’s liability involved, we may contact parties/witnesses to obtain statements or try to obtain a police report, if available.

Next

An estimate is written for the damage. In severe cases, an in-person inspection may be needed.

Allow Wawanesa to inspect your vehicle as soon as possible to avoid any storage fees from tow yards or auto repair facilities.

Next

Payment will be issued either to you directly or to the preferred auto repair shop handling the repairs.

Your claims adjuster can provide you a list of one of our Preferred Repair Network Facilities, where the repairs are guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle involved in the claim.

Filing Property Insurance Claims

Information to Have When Filing Your Property Insurance Claim

When you file a property claim for theft or damage covered by your homeowners, condo or renters insurance, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your policy number
  • The facts of the incident, such as date, time, what happened, etc.
  • Any reports from experts or contractors who’ve inspected the damage
  • A copy of the police report if there is one
  • Optionally you can submit pictures of the damage

Should you report your property claim?

Whenever an accident occurs resulting in bodily injury or property damage that will likely exceed your deductible, you should file an insurance claim. Certain types of homeowners, condo, or renters insurance claims may be excluded from the policy, so if you’re unsure whether something is covered, review your insurance policy documents online or call 800-640-2920 and speak with one of our helpful agents who can review your policy. If the damage is caused by an ongoing maintenance issue or a long-term problem that hasn’t been repaired, it may not be covered by the policy.

What happens once your property claim is submitted?

As soon as possible, take steps to protect your home against further damage. For example:

Water damage: hire a water mitigation company to dry out the home.

Roof damage: have a roofer protect the roof against additional damage with a tarp.

Fence damage: ensure the property is safe and secure with a temporary fence.

You’ll be assigned an adjuster who will verify the facts of the loss, review your coverage, and explain the process.

Depending on the severity of the damages an in-person inspection may be required.

Next

For damages to the home itself Wawanesa will prepare an estimate for the covered damages and issue payment minus your deductible.

Next

The adjuster will request a list of the items, with their value, age, and condition for damage or loss of your personal property.

Next

You’ll need to find a contractor to complete the repairs. Ensure you save all receipts related to the claim.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance Claims

Should I file my insurance claim online or by phone?

You can file your claim in two ways — either online or over the phone by calling 888-WAWA-CLAIM (929-2252). Both methods are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Auto Insurance Claims

When filing an auto claim, you must promptly notify your insurance company of an accident, loss, or lawsuit potentially covered by your insurance policy. It’s a good idea to check your policy terms for the specific notice timeframes which apply to your particular claim. By waiting too long, the insurance company’s investigation may be substantially jeopardized, which may impact your claim settlement and available coverage.

Property Insurance Claims

For most home, condo, or renters insurance claims, you have one year from the date of the loss to report your claim. It’s a good idea to check your policy terms for the specific notice timeframes which apply to your particular claim. By waiting too long, the insurance company’s investigation may be substantially jeopardized, which may impact your claim settlement and available coverage. In California, if your property claim is a result of a designated State of Emergency, for example, a wildfire, you have two years from the date of loss. However, it’s best to file your claim as soon as possible.

How long does an insurance claim take?

Auto Claims

Since each auto insurance claim is unique, the length of time for a claim to be settled can vary a great deal. It all depends on the complexity of the incident or accident and the damage incurred, how extensive the repairs are, and many other factors.

Property Claims

Claims to your home, condo, or renters insurance can take just a few days to resolve or up to several months depending on the severity of the loss. If your home is rendered uninhabitable due to the damages sustained, the claim could be open until repairs are complete.

How does the repair process work?

Auto Repairs After Filing a Claim

Once you’ve had the damage appraised on your car, either through a virtual or physical inspection, simply give the estimate to the repair shop and complete any authorizations the auto repair shop requires. If the repair shop finds any additional damage, they’ll need to contact the adjuster to complete a supplemental inspection or estimate.

However, if you use one of our Preferred Repair Network Facilities, the process is much simpler. All you have to do is set up an appointment with the repair shop for both the inspection and repairs. Then, they’ll prepare an estimate on our behalf without Wawanesa needing to inspect your vehicle separately. Once the repairs are complete, you’ll pay your deductible to the auto repair shop and pick up your vehicle. If you use a Wawanesa-approved auto repair provider, your claim repairs will be guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle involved in the claim.
