Wawanesa Drive Change Program

Wawanesa Drive Change is an optional and voluntary usage-based automobile insurance program (“Program”) provided by Wawanesa (“We, Us, Our”) and our third-party Program provider that provides a personalized premium calculated based on your driving behaviours.

The Wawanesa Drive Change application (“App”) can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and is required to enroll in the Program. You will be required to allow Us access to all the required data from your smartphone as set out in these Terms and Conditions. The App will monitor your driving behaviours and the driving data will be collected and shared with Us and the Program provider. The App uses your smartphone to monitor your location, speed, acceleration, and other driving behaviours set out in the Driving Data section of these Terms and Conditions. We and Our Program provider will use the driving data collected to determine your personalized premium.

Wawanesa is committed to protecting your privacy and personal information. We may collect, use, and disclose your personal information to provide and manage Our products and services, handle your claims, complete analysis, handle your inquiries or requests, develop the Program, offer you products and services, communicate with you, and as required or permitted by law. You can withdraw from the Program at any time by contacting your broker. The Privacy section of these Terms and Conditions provides more information, and you can access Wawanesa’s Privacy Policy at www.wawanesa.com.

Enrollment in the Program is voluntary and is subject to your acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. You should not install or use the application if you do not agree to any of the Program’s Terms and Conditions. We reserve the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time with appropriate notice of any modifications provided to you within the App.

Eligibility

  • You must be the principal driver of a personal use private passenger vehicle or motorhome listed ona Wawanesa automobile insurance policy.
  • The Private Passenger vehicle or Motorhome must be insured with third party liability coverage.
  • You must have an eligible smartphone with a data plan. Eligible smartphones include phones with the following operating systems:
    • iPhone: model running operating system iOS 13.0 or later
    • Android: model running operating system Android 8.0 or later
  • You must provide Us with your active mobile phone number and email address, and they must remain valid throughout your enrollment.
  • You must have the most recent version of the App installed on your smartphone allowing the App to collect and transfer data to Us.
  • You must consent to participate in the Program and accept these Terms and Conditions.
  • You must remain enrolled in the Program with an active App on your smartphone during your policy period.

Enrollment

To enroll in the Program please contact your broker. Your broker will initiate the enrollment process and you will receive a welcome email or text message with a link to download the App. A separate text/email will be sent to each enrolled principal driver on your policy. Once you proceed with the instructions in the App and complete your enrollment, you will need to consent to the Terms and Conditions and allow location and other data tracking in your phone settings and permissions within the mobile App (for more details about the information tracked by the app please refer to the “App Permissions” and “Driving Data” sections). After enrollment is complete, the App will start tracking your trips and share the data with Us.

Can all listed drivers enroll in the Program?

All drivers listed as the principal driver of a personal use private passenger vehicle or motorhome on the policy have the option to enroll in the Program. Wawanesa does not require all principal drivers to enroll in the Program for any individual principal driver to be able to participate in the Program.

Using the App

After enrolling and enabling the required settings, the App will automatically track and score your trips. The App will automatically assign you as a passenger or a driver on each trip, however it is your responsibility to ensure that this assignment is correct. If you are a passenger, using public transportation or using any other method of transportation (motorcycle, golf cart, boat, etc.) it is your responsibility to edit the trip to indicate that.

If you log out of the App, your trips will not be recorded. To log back in, you will need to use the email address and password which you used when setting up your account.

Trips in areas with limited or no cellular connection may not be recorded.

Editing Driver/Passenger Assignment in the App

The App will allow you to edit if you were a driver or a passenger or if you were using another method of transportation. After a period of time, the App will automatically start assigning your role and you can edit it within 7 days of the trip. It is your responsibility to ensure that each trip is correctly assigned.

Downloading and Activating the App

You will have 15 days to download and activate the App once you have signed up for the Program. If you fail to do so within 15 days, you will be removed from the Program and your policy will be rerated removing any enrollment discount associated with the Program. You will receive new policy documents, billing statements and a new Certificate of Automobile Insurance. Re-enrollment after removal will be subject to Wawanesa’s discretion.

Changing Your Email Address or Mobile Phone Number

You must contact your broker when your email address or mobile phone number changes to have your account updated. If you do not provide your broker with changes to your email address or phone number, you may not be able to receive important information about the Program.

Trips Driven Using Unlisted Vehicles

The Program is intended to capture data when you are the driver of any private passenger vehicle or motorhome, including those you do not own and are not listed on your Wawanesa automobile insurance policy. However, the App will record any trips when you are in any mode of transportation. It is your responsibility to edit these trips to prevent them from being used in the determination of your personalized premium. If you do not edit your trips to remove any trips during which you are not the driver of any private passenger vehicle or motorhome, it might impact the accuracy of your driving score.

Change in Drivers on Your Policy

You must notify your broker when any driver is to be added or removed from your policy. Drivers added to your policy can sign up to the Program at any time, provided they meet the eligibility requirements of the Program. If you are no longer listed as the principal driver of any private passenger vehicle or motorhome on the policy, your driving score (for more details about your driving score please refer to the “Driving Behaviours Measured to Determine Your Driving Score” Section) will not be used for rating but you may remain enrolled if you choose to continue tracking your driving behaviours. If you choose to terminate your enrollment, you must notify your broker.

Change in Vehicles on Your Policy

You must notify your broker when any vehicle is to be added or removed from your policy. Adding or removing a vehicle from your policy may result in a change to the assignment of the principal driver of the vehicle(s). If you are no longer listed as the principal driver of any private passenger vehicle or motorhome on the policy, your driving score will not be used for rating but you may remain enrolled if you choose to continue tracking your driving behaviours. If you choose to terminate your enrollment, you must notify your broker.

Who Can Use the App?

Each principal driver enrolled in the Program will have their own individual App and it should not be used by any other drivers on the policy.

Accessing Information About Your Driving

The App will display your estimated discount based on your driving score which is determined by your driving behaviours.

You will also be able to access information about your trips through the App. Trips in areas with limited or no cellular connection may not be recorded, and therefore, will not be included in the calculation of your driving score.

Transferring the App to Another Smartphone

If you would like to use the App on another phone you will need to download the App on the new phone and sign into your account to start tracking your trips. You will need to make sure all the settings on the new phone are set as required to track your driving. The previous device will stop recording trips and an error message will be displayed on the App’s dashboard of the old device.

Phone Battery

Before you start your trip, please make sure your phone is charged and turned on to help ensure your trip is recorded.

Fees for Using the App

The App itself is free of charge. The App requires cellular data to track your trips. You will be responsible for any roaming or data usage fees imposed by your cellular provider.

Driving Behaviours Measured to Determine Your Driving Score

Your driving score will be determined by the following driving behaviors:

  • Distracted driving (Example: physical handling of your phone while driving)
  • Speeding
  • Braking
  • Cornering
  • Acceleration

The driving behaviours listed above may be contextualized by the following factors:

  • Road type
  • Time of day
  • Distance travelled
  • Day of week

Enrollment Discount

Upon enrollment to the Program, an enrollment discount will apply to each eligible vehicle that has a principal driver enrolled in the Program.

Impact of Your Driving Score on Your Insurance Premium

Upon processing of your policy renewal, the driving score of each enrolled principal driver will be used in determining their personalized premium of the corresponding vehicle they are assigned to. To calculate the discount, the Program will use the last 6 months of driving behaviour data collected through the App. If you haven’t been enrolled for 6 months, the enrollment discount will continue to apply to your next policy term.

Wawanesa will not apply any surcharges to your premium based on your driver driving score. However, your discount may be increased or decreased from the prior term depending on your driving behaviour. If you have been enrolled in the Program for at least 6 months and have not recorded more than 1,000 kms of driving in the App in the last 6-month period prior to the processing of your renewal, you will be removed from the Program upon your policy renewal.

Coverages Impacted by Discount

The discount will apply to the following coverages of each vehicle with a principal driver enrolled in the Program:

  • Collision or Upset
  • Comprehensive
  • All Perils
  • Specified Perils
  • Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD)
  • Third Party Liability – Bodily Injury
  • Third Party Liability – Property Damage
  • Accident Benefits

Withdrawing From the Program

You may decide to withdraw from the Program at any time. You will need to contact your broker to process the withdrawal.

Termination of Enrollment by Wawanesa

Wawanesa reserves the right to terminate your enrollment in the Program for any of the following reasons:

  • If We determine that there has been a misuse of the App or manipulation of the score;
  • If you fail to record at least 1,000 km in the 6-month period prior to the processing of your renewal documents;
  • If you fail to install and activate the App within 15 days of enrollment; or
  • If you fail to record any activity in the App within the last 60 days prior to the processing of your renewal documents.

What happens when enrollment is terminated (by you or Wawanesa)?

Removal or withdrawal from the Program will remove access to your account within the App and it will stop tracking your data. You will also lose any discounts associated with the Program that were applied to your premium, and you will receive new policy documents and billing statements reflecting the change.

Wawanesa Drive Change Rewards Program

The Wawanesa Drive Change Rewards Program (“Rewards Program”) allows you to redeem points for rewards from one or more of the available vendors. When you enroll in Wawanesa Drive Change you automatically enroll in the Rewards Program as well.

The Rewards Program may be subject to change or terminated by Wawanesa with reasonable notice.

Earning Points

You will earn points if the following conditions are met:

  • The trip was recorded in the App.
  • Your role on the trip is recorded as the driver.
  • There were no distracted driving events identified in the App during the trip.

The number of points you earn for each trip will depend on the length of the trip in minutes as outlined below:

  • 3 point for trips shorter than 10 minutes
  • 6 points for trips between 10 to 20 minutes
  • 9 points for trips 20 minutes or longer

A maximum of 36 points can be earned in one day.

Redeeming Points

You can view and redeem your points through the Wawanesa Drive Change App. You will be able to see your balance and apply it to any of the available rewards options.

Your points do not have any monetary value, are not transferable and cannot be combined with the points of any other driver.

We are not responsible for any lost or unused points caused by any technical error or defect with your device, or to any lost or misdirected reward.

Impact of Termination of Enrollment on Your Points

If your enrollment is terminated, by you or Us, you will lose access to your points, and you will not be able to redeem them.

Expiry of Points

Points will expire 2 years from the date they were earned. If points expire, you will not be able to redeem them.

Privacy

Wawanesa has measures in place to ensure the security and confidentiality of your personal information and driving data. Subject to the provisions of these Terms and Conditions, the driving data and personal information collected will only be used or disclosed for purposes, or by people, set out in these Terms and Conditions.

We will have access to your driving data, driving score, the reward points you have earned, and your personal information when such access is required to provide and manage Our products and services, handle your claims, complete analysis, handle your inquiries or requests, develop the Program, offer you products and services, communicate with you, and as required or permitted by law.

Certain driving data and personal information may be communicated to your broker. In such cases, your broker is required to preserve the confidentiality of your data and personal information and can only use it as required to deliver their services.

App Permissions

If you use the App, We may collect, access and share data from your mobile device.

The App may access personal information on your mobile device through:

  • Information you provide to Us (e.g. photo uploads)
  • Information about your mobile device (e.g. Phone model, device ID and OS version)
  • Information you have permitted the App to access via the App’s permissions

The App may also access and collect the following data from your mobile device:

  • Device background location through network and GPS (to enable the App to automatically detect trips)
  • Phone calls and read status/identity (to allow phone calls to be made through the App)
  • Wifi, and network status and connections

Third Parties

We may share your personal information with third parties as required under the Program and these Terms and Conditions. Third parties are only provided with the personal information that is required. Your personal information may be transferred to third parties located outside of Canada in jurisdictions that do not have laws offering the same level of protection. Regardless of the location of the third party, We have contracts that hold third parties to standards of confidentiality and security concerning your personal information that are similar to the standards that We adhere to.

Driving Data

In addition to the personal information you provide when you enrol in the Wawanesa Drive Change Program (e.g., your name, email address, and cellphone number), the App may also collect the following driving data:

  • Speeds (example: met or exceeded)
  • Acceleration (example: smooth or sudden)
  • Braking (example: soft or hard)
  • Turns (example: smooth or abrupt)
  • Distracted driving (example: stopped and moving)
  • Travel times (example: night or day)
  • Roads used (example: highways or secondary roads)

Retention and Destruction

Your driving information will be stored while it is required for the purposes of the Program. If you terminate your enrollment, your driving information will be securely destroyed at the end of the data retention period.

Warranty Disclaimer

Wawanesa offers no warranties regarding the use of the App and its Rewards Program, which is offered as is. Wawanesa gives no representations, warranties, guarantees or conditions of any kind, whether express, implied, statutory or collateral, or arising from statute, course of dealing, usage of trade or at common law, including but not limited to, implied representations, warranties or conditions of merchantability, merchantable quality, quality or fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. Wawanesa does not warrant that the App’s functionality will be secure, uninterrupted or free from error, that any defects in the App will be corrected or that the App or servers that make it available are free or viruses or other harmful conditions or components or programs. You agree that your use of or inability to use the app is at your sole risk and you assume all the risks inherent in its use.

Limitation of Liability

Except for damages that may be caused by gross negligence or wilful misconduct, Wawanesa cannot be held liable for any direct or indirect damages caused by the Wawanesa Drive Change Program or the Rewards Program. Wawanesa is also not responsible for the redemption of reward points or the use of rewards.

We also encourage you to exercise caution and to comply with road safety laws and regulations. Current laws prohibit the use of a smartphone or other handheld electronic device while driving. Please do not use your phone or any other handheld electronic device while driving.

By enrolling in the Program and using the App, you release Wawanesa from all liability, and you undertake to hold them harmless from any damages, losses, breakage, claims or expenses, direct or indirect, resulting from your use of a phone or other handheld electronic device while driving, in violation of applicable laws and regulations.
